Cursed Dragon Gold

Dragon’s Gold

Description: Dragon’s gold is actually a catch-all term for cursed dragon treasure. It can come in many forms including a gemstone, a piece of jewelry, a silver goblet, or even a single gold coin. Dragon’s gold is created when a dragon has hoarded a treasure for a long period of time and then it is slain on or near the hoard and some of the treasure absorbs the dying dragon’s blood. Exactly how much treasure is cursed depends on the age of the dragon, the length of time it has spent with the hoard, and the depth of the dragon’s greed. Anyone who picks up or touches the cursed treasure must make a Wisdom save (DC 20) or succumb to dragon sickness. A successful save makes an individual immune to the effects of the dragon’s gold for 24 hours.

Dragon Sickness: A victim of dragon sickness becomes obsessed with wealth and will be exceptionally attached to the original dragon’s gold that cursed him or her. The victim retains all of their skills and abilities but their alignment changes to neutral evil. The curse causes the victim to become motivated by greed and they will lie, steal, and kill in order to attain more wealth. The victim will not willingly give up or spend money for any reason preferring instead to starve rather than buy food. The victim will hoard their wealth and become increasingly paranoid and distrustful. They will become irrationally afraid that others want to take their wealth. Once the victim has acquired a small fortune equaling to 20,000 gold or more, they will retreat from society at which point they will zealously guard their wealth until they wither and die. Upon death, the victim becomes a wraith who guards their hidden treasure hoard until destroyed. Dragon sickness can be cured with either a wish or remove greater curse spell.

Destroying the Dragon’s Gold: Only the fire of a powerful volcano or the breath weapon of an adult or older dragon can destroy dragon’s gold.
