This Adventure is recommended for a Level 8 group
Overview: While exploring a dungeon, the players encounter a dragonborn named Fenton Warbid who is lugging a huge chest. He’s searching the dungeon for a red dragon he heard has made its lair here. He has a chest of cursed dragon gold he needs to give to the dragon. He will try to hide the fact that he is searching for a dragon and what’s in the chest but will instead say that he searching for a friend named Redborn. This adventure can be tacked onto another dungeon as a small side quest or potentially you could build a dungeon around it.
Setup: You enter the next cavern room and a strange sight greets your eyes. You see a young male dragonborn with red scales and wearing a robe. He’s sitting on a large chest and sighs loudly. When you enter his eyes light up and his mouth splits into a large grin. “What a fortuitous meeting. I was just thinking how much I needed a group of brave adventurers when you just walked in. Fortune smiles on me today. Well met!”
The dragonborn introduces himself as Fenton Warbid. He’s on an errand for a friend named Redborn. He has to bring him this chest which contains something really dangerous. His friend is a little further in the cave but a nasty-looking creature has taken up residence in the next cavern room. It’s sleeping right now but Fenton wouldn’t be able to lug the chest past without waking the creature. If the party would mind disposing of it the Fenton’s friend Redborn is sure to reward them. He’s quite rich. When asked why his friend lives in a cave, Fenton will say that his friend is a bit of a homebody. Fenton will carefully avoid saying that his friend is a red dragon.
The next room has a cloaker in it. The creature currently hangs from a stalagmite and its tail can be seen flicking about even if the rest of the creature melds into the ceiling. The creature is still asleep and if the party can make a successful Stealth check (DC 15), they can sneak up on it and it will suffer disadvantage on its initiative roll. No penalty on failure.
Fenton’s chest clanks and chinks with the sound of metal. He cannot sneak past the cloaker alone. He will not let the player’s open it insisting that the contents are very, very dangerous. Inside is a pile of gold and gems cursed as dragon gold.
Once the party defeats the cloaker they can move into the next chamber which is very, very warm. It’s a dragon’s den and at the far end is an adult red dragon who watches the group enter. Fenton will greet Redborn as an old friend and introduce the group as his companions. The dragon will be naturally suspicious but won’t attack unless threatened. Fenton will drag the chest to Redborn and say, “I think I’ve found the last of it.” He opens the chest revealing that it is full of gold coins and precious gems. While Redborn sniffs and studies the chest, Fenton will advise the group to step back. Redborn will grunt in satisfaction, rears back his head, and blast the chest with his deadly firebreath. The room will grow unbearably hot for a couple of seconds. Upon finishing, the chest and all of its contents are burned into an unrecognizable lump of charred metal. The dragon will then casually flick the remnants into a hole. Redborn will then tell Fenton that he did well and he will give the Fenton a sack and bid the group leave him.
Redborn will not be aggressive or attack unless the party attacks him, Fenton will come to his assistance and fight against the group. See adult red dragon (Monster Manual) and Fenton below.
Upon leaving, Fenton will explain. Redborn’s older brother Scorch was killed many years ago by a couple of knights. Unfortunately, Scorch cursed some of his treasure hoard as he died. The knights are long since dead and Redborn has recovered some of his brother’s hoard. However, anyone who picks up the cursed treasure are drawn to the rest of it so Redborn keeps getting attacked by greedy fools. He’s decided to put a stop to it and has sent Fenton out to recover the rest of the cursed treasure so Redborn can dispose of it. The group could attack Redborn if they want to loot his treasure but Fenton recommends against it. Fenton is a cleric of the dragon god and thus serves the good of all dragons. He doesn’t usually work with red dragons since they tend to be evil but Redborn is a very lazy and reserved creature who made a reasonable request for help.
Fenton will provide the group with Redborn’s reward which includes 1000 gp worth of gems and a druid’s vestment (see Dungeon Master’s Guide).
Fenton Warbid has gold-colored scales, wears scale mail, and possesses a chipper and optimistic attitude. He always sees the bright side in situations and people. He’s a cleric to the dragon god so he works towards the benefit of dragons and dragonborn.
