Not Another Escort Quest – Part 3

Adventure designed for a party of level 10-12 Adventurers

Overview: Concluding this adventure, Gabril Lightfoot and the adventurers arrive at the sultan’s palace. Sultan Achmed al Rashik the 12th reveals that he wants to purchase the Amulet of Greed from Gabril. He has been collecting them. He has the Amulets of Sloth, Envy, and Gluttony. He is working towards the whole set. Gabril attempts to give up the amulet but becomes possessed by a chained devil. The devil activates the devils in the other amulets. They will need to be destroyed.

Setup: In the morning, a contingent of the sultan’s soldiers arrive to escort the party to the sultan’s palace. Fayne Dio and Gabril Lightfeather ride on a palanquin while everyone else walks to the palace. The sultan’s home is enormous with tiled floors, large ceilings, fountains, expensive carpets, stained glass windows and large open archways. The group is lead to a well-furnished sitting room complete with plush couches and a small pool in the center filled with colorful fish. Sultan Achmed al Rashik the 12th enters. He is a large man with huge black mustaches and and enormous beard. He beckons everyone to sit and enjoy wine. The Sultan’s advisor Mushak joins the group. Mushak is a thin older man with a deep scar that runs down his left cheek.

After a bit of discussion on Lightfeather’s recent escapes from death, Sultan Rashik gets down to business. The chandelier was really an excuse to bring Lightfeather to the palace. The sultan escorts the group to his treasure chamber where he shows three Amulets of the Damned on display under glass. He already has Lust, Envy, and Wrath. The Sultan would like to purchase the Amulet of Greed as he is working on completing the set. Gabril becomes upset and refuses to give up the Amulet. His eyes glow green and he accuses the Sultan of attempting to steal it from him. Sultan Rashik is confused. Mushak admits that he was the one who sent the rashaka Hila. The Sultan had no idea. Regardless, Gabril turns to run. When Mushak orders that the guards stop him, Gabril begins to shake uncontrollably. He then transforms into a cross between Gabril and a chain devil (see Monster Manual). The creature waves its hands and three more chain devils emerge from behind the broken glass display.

Once the three chain devils are destroyed, the amulets return to normal. However, the challenge becomes how to stop the chain devil possessing Gabril without killing him. A player may make a successful Intelligence or Investigation check (DC 15) to realize that the ritual circle in the old temple was designed to keep the chain devil from appearing. Fayne Dio can recreate the circle but he will need the group to keep Gabril busy without killing him for five rounds.

Conclusion: If Fayne Dio recreates the circle then once the chain devil possessing Gabril is lured or pulled into it, the possession ends and Gabril can toss the amulet aside. He will sell it to Sultan Achmed al Rashik and then thank the party. The party can escort him home for the rest of their payment. If the party destroys Gabril while possessed they also destroy the Amulet of Greed. Sultan Rashik will be upset over its loss but grateful that he wasn’t killed. He will reward the party for their service with the choice of one uncommon magical item from his collection.
