One Crazy Goblin

An Adventure for 2-4 players at Level 12

Overview: Oddrick sends the players on a quest to recover a Sword of Mixed Blessings. On a rope bridge overhanging a deep valley stands a lone goblin named Sir Wartsprat. He challenges anyone who tries to pass him. He carries the Sword of Mixed Blessings. He thinks he is a valiant knight of old tasked with guarding the bridge from intruders.

Setup: The players may encounter Oddrick in his shop and he has a small task for them. He would like them to retrieve a Sword of Mixed Blessings from a knight called Sir Wartsprat. The knight can be found on a mountain pass called the Devil’s Tooth.

Climbing the Pass: The journey into the Devil’s Tooth is a challenge. The road, if it could be called that, is overgrown and considered rough terrain. The players must walk single file up the mountain road. Each player will need to make a Survival check DC 15. On a success, the player makes it to the swinging bridge without incident. Any player who fails the check must roll a 1d8 to determine what misfortune befalls them.

Devil’s Tooth Misfortune Table

1 – The player falls down a small gulley and takes 4d6 bludgeoning damage.

2 – The player gets stung by an exotic spider and takes 4d6 poison damage.

3 – The player walks past a shrieking mushroom and is deafened for the next 1d6 + 1 hours.

4 – The player gets pranked by a thieving pixie. Lose one random item.

5 – The player walks through a cloud of biting insects and takes 6d4 piercing damage.

6 – The player gets into a fight with an angry animal and takes 3d8 slashing damage.

7 – The player steps on a sticky puddle of goo and is slowed for the next 1d6 + 1 hours. The player’s speed is halved, they suffer a -2 penalty to AC and Dexterity saving throws and cannot use reactions.

8 – The player encounters grasping vines that drain their energy. It takes all of their effort to break free. The player takes one level of exhaustion.

The Swinging Bridge: As the players reach the top of the Devil’s Tooth, the extremely narrow path stops at a swinging rope bridge. It is 100 feet across and dangles 300 feet above the valley floor below. In the center of the bridge stands a goblin wearing a mishmash suit of armor and holding a beautiful blade.

“Halt,” cries the goblin. “Know that thou stands before the brave knight Sir Wartsprat. Any who dares trespass here will meet violent death at my blade. Return from whence you came.”

Sir Wartsprat is a delusional goblin and will guard the bridge with his life. The players can easily spot the blade they seek in his hands but the challenge comes on how to retrieve it. Sir Wartsprat will not negotiate or give up the blade willingly. He could be shoved over the bridge edge but then the blade would fall with him and that could mean a long search to find it.  The bridge is narrow and only one player can be in melee range with Sir Wartsprat at a time. The players could just attack with ranged weapons at which point Sir Wartsprat hides behind a tower shield granting him full cover. He will then call the players cowards who fear to face him in honorable combat. If reduced to 1/3 of his Hitpoints (25), Sir Wartsprat will surrender and concede victory but only if one player challenges him in solo combat..

Mental Delusion: Sir Wartsprat thinks he is a knight. He upholds the rules of chivalry and honor. He will not attack unless someone accepts his challenge or tries to push past him on the bridge. He will not attack an enemy that surrenders. He will be respectful to a noble lady. His duty is to guard the bridge and allow no one to pass. He will not alter this mission. He cannot be charmed or put to sleep.

Actions

Multiattack: Sir Wartsprat attacks three times with his Sword of Mixed Blessings.

Sword of Mixed Blessings: Melee Weapon Attack. +8 to hit. reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d8 +7) slashing damage. On a critical hit, roll on the Sword of Mixed Blessings table.

Reaction

Defending Shield: If Sir Wartsprat is attacked with a ranged weapon or spell and no one is in melee range, he can make a hide action. He carries with him a tower shield that he can hide behind to gain total cover. He does not hold the tower shield while in melee combat.

Note: If Sir Wartsprat hits with a critical hit with the Sword of Mixed Blessings then the damage from the spell will cause the rope bridge to collapse. All players on the bridge must make a Dexterity saving throw DC 15 or fall 300 feet to the ground taking 30d6 bludgeoning damage. On a successful save, the player clings to the bridge and takes 3d6 bludgeoning damage as it slams into the cliff wall. They can then climb up the bridge with an Athletics check DC 10. Sir Wartsprat will fall as well. If this happens, any player in melee range of Sir Wartsprat can also make a Strength check DC 15 to grab at the goblin before he falls to his death. On a success the player catches the goblin and can drag him up the bridge with an Athletics check DC 12.

Conclusions: If saved, Sir Wartsprat will pledge himself to the player who saved him and serve him or her faithfully as a devoted minion if they will have him. Since the bridge is gone, his duty is complete. He will be particularly happy if this person is a noble or has a noble background. He will also willingly hand over the Sword of Mixed Blessings. Oddrick will pay the players with 2,000 gold pieces or a magical item of equivalent value in exchange for the sword. If the players decide to run off with the blade or cheat Oddrick, they will have earned a dangerous enemy.
