The Bow of Light and Shadow

The bow was constructed per your orders and delivered in the usual manner. My agents inform me that the target received the bow assuming it to be a gift from her Ilhar. Five days later, the target left for a patrol on the lower regions with four others. She did not return. The official report is that she died in a conflict with rogue duerger. Just in case, I sent a scout to the battle site. The scout reported that there was a lot of blood and no sign of any bodies. They did find signs of giant centipedes so it is likely that the body has been consumed. The duerger probably took the bow and other valuables. I will send a buyer to see if they can purchase it back. If Lolth wills it, we should be able to use the bow again.

Bow of Light and Shadow

Weapon (Longbow), rare (requires attunement)

A bow of shadows is +1 longbow and a favored weapon of the drow created using dark arts as it fires arrows made from pure darkness. In the underdark, it is virtually an invisible killer and favored by assassins. The shaft is often decorated with images of spiders and death. A bow of light and shadow is a cursed variant of this weapon and appears indistinguishable from a normal bow of shadows except that it comes with a light curse.

Power: The bow fires shadow arrows that deal 2d8 necrotic damage.

Light Curse: When attuned, you radiate a small glow similar to the spell faerie fire that is only visible to enemies. This activates when you are in combat. You and your allies are unaware of the glow. All attacks made against you gain advantage. You do not gain the benefit of being invisible and suffer disadvantage on hide checks.

Identify Resistant: The light curse is not revealed through an identify spell. However, a knowledge arcana check DC 18 will spot the corruption of the spells laid upon the bow suggesting that something is wrong with it.

Destroying the Bow: To destroy a bow of light and shadow requires dealing 30 or more force damage to it.

Adventure Hooks:

  • The players come across a drow raiding party and one of the drow fighters is using the bow.
  • The players come across a dead drow with the bow. The victim’s mother sends a group of hunters to retrieve the bow as she suspects foul play.
  • An injured hunter comes across the players and wants to sell the the bow. The hunter has been injured in every expedition since he bought the bow and he thinks it is jinxed.
  • A young drow assassin attempts to kill one of the players who has upset a drow family. The assassin’s name is Tathlan Teleena. She doesn’t realize she has been betrayed by her sister Meltyn who considers her weak and wants her dead. If captured, she is willing to betray her family in exchange for protection.
